Designs for a public artwork that forms a landmark part of a £547,000 regeneration project at Oldmeldrum have gone on show in the town.

Last year Oldmeldrum was awarded from the Scottish Government’s town-centre regeneration fund to upgrade and improve the historic heart of the fast-expanding community.

Over the past four months Deeside artist Janet McEwan has been working on the art project for the revamped Square, and held a week-long series of workshop sessions with local people.

In May the sculpture and ceramics graduate of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen organised a series of walks and talks in and around Oldmeldrum led by experts on the area’s geological, architectural and archaeological heritage.

She has now put her initial designs for an artwork – inspired by prehistoric artefacts from the area and created from local stone – on display in the Royal British Legion Scotland club and nearby community cafe at the town house as well as the library at Meldrum Academy.

The artist said comments from the public consultation has helped her draw up the designs, which be on view until August 27.

She will welcome further feedback from residents on her ideas.

“From written comments, conversations and even drawings it seemed that while a number of people were concerned any civic artwork should strongly represent the town’s heritage it was also clear a good number of people were also thinking about how Oldmeldrum’s aspirations for the future could be reflected,” she said.

She hoped she had met that challenge through her designs.
